Rose City Park
Rose City Park
Perched commandingly on a corner lot in the Rose City Park neighborhood, our client’s Arts and Crafts style home checked almost all the boxes – except for one in particular. Its kitchen was so small and awkward it was almost comical. After living with it for a couple years (and learning how to accommodate it’s complete lack of storage, workspace or ability to fit more than 1 person at a time) our clients reached out to THESIS for a complete new direction. Related to this design brief was the desire to somehow improve the connection with the outdoors. Because the house’s footprint was large and centered in the site, the back yard space was small so every square foot needed to be activated and used intentionally. THESIS quickly rose to the challenge and a singular design scheme rose to the top. A “big move” was needed – and that big move was an addition centering on a large pocketing slider – a door that when open, would leave a fourteen foot open air window to a new deck and re-landscaped yard beyond. Centrally positioned on the door would be a large and sculptural dine-in island, with a curving form at one end and a central brass pedestal anchoring it. The resulting kitchen was spread out into functional zones, each one carefully addressing the client’s unique needs and taking a very atypical floorplan and making it work harmoniously. Elsewhere in the house, two bathrooms were heavily renovated to feature luxurious finishes and features, including a massive second story steam shower boasting semi-translucent “glowing” pink quartzite and luxe Waterworks fixtures.
