A-Frame Redux
Shrouded in trees at the base of Mt. Hood lies a piece of land so lush and overgrown, it is almost impossible to notice it when passing by. Nevertheless, it caught the eye of our client who had long dreamed of a quintessential mountain cabin retreat to complement their family rental at the Oregon Coast – two rentals offering the best of what Oregon has to offer. Contacting THESIS, the client had prepared a thorough and well-thought out project brief which focused on one particular aspect – the cabin had to be an A-Frame or at least conjure that imagery. THESIS got to work, focusing on how to play up the strengths of the A-Frame design while finding ways to improve on its weaknesses. With standing seam metal roofing, exterior rigid insulation and interior cavity insulation set between glu-lam “ribs”, the building’s exterior envelope is an enhanced version of those early post-war cabins that made their mark across the country. A single, shed-roof protrusion from the main house volume marks the entry, and sets up a dynamic grouping of high windows framing the forest views. The primary volume houses an expansive double-height space with living, dining, and a midcentury wood-burning fireplace. The wall facing the forest is entirely comprised of geometric windows, from the floor level to its peak nearly 30’ in the air. While conceived as a retreat for the family, the house also is intentionally suited towards AirBnB vacation rental, with an optimal blend of sleeping rooms, flexible furniture solutions for additional guests, and a family-friendly layout offering two distinct family rooms, one on each level. A true primary suite with ensuite bath and luxury features distinguishes the house from the rest of its competition as a premier destination in the snow zone of Mt Hood.
