Alberta Arts ADU

The design brief for this project was to create a discrete, private space for the client’s mother as an age-in-place refuge and down-scale from her prior urban condominium. By creating a simple, archetypal gabled volume with a small footprint, the THESIS team was able to locate the structure discretely against the rear property line of the client’s lot, in a manner that preserved private outdoor space for both the ADU and primary unit, and allowed both structures to enjoy private views and access to light. Conceived as two primary spaces divided by a central plumbing core (comprising bathroom and kitchenette), the ADU had both a logical and easy-to construct structural layout that allowed for a fast, 3 month (start to finish) construction time. Utilizing enhanced insulation and windows allowed the structure to be fully conditioned by a single, economical heat-pump unit, while large operable windows allow for passive ventilation and generous views. Throughout the unit, age in place considerations such as low thresholds, generous clearances at kitchen and bath, and a single-level design make the design functional for users of all ages and abilities. On the exterior, the scale of the ADU allowed for it to be designed with a distinct and separate aesthetic for the primary house, making it an interesting modern counter-point to the craftsman home it adjoins.
