Marshall Park Oasis
Marshall Park Oasis
On an overgrown and dis-used half-acre parcel of land, THESIS envisioned a dramatic modern home spreading from the footprint of an existing century-old bungalow. Tasked by clients with creating a 5,000+ sf residence that offered open-concept, indoor-outdoor spaces, and a living showroom for the client’s interior finishes business, THESIS used the benefit of the large lot to spread horizontally rather than vertically into a grand custom home that gives the appearance of cascading with the gentle slope of the site. Deep, pronounced overhangs are a response to the PNW climate and also a subtle nod to the Prairie School of architecture, and the overlapping of the roof planes lends a dynamism and movement in the horizontal direction, while masonry “mass walls” pierce the roof in the vertical, anchoring the forms back to the ground. By utilizing long-spanning open-web-joist construction, the interior program of the home is left largely free of structure, so spaces are allowed to flow freely around the mass walls, which themselves help shape and define rooms without the express need for otherwise dividing up the space. Outside, long stretches of glass open onto the grassy, sloping yard beyond and allow indoor spaces to spill effortlessly onto an expansive entertaining deck and a “sunken” patio addressing a full gym (located in the original basement of the existing structure). The home’s singular double height space offers children’s bedrooms a vantage point and views, while the main level primary suite can engage directly with the outdoors.
