Northeast Attic Revival
Northeast Attic Revival
Sometimes existing spaces in homes aren’t far off from achieving their goals – they just need a little “push”. Such was the case with our Northeast Attic Revival project in the Hollywood neighborhood. While the clients were already living in the space as a primary bedroom, it had a stair that was just a bit too steep and lacked a clear identity and thoughtfulness that would make it really *sing*. Oh, and a bathroom. THESIS entered with a series of small but meaningful interventions which just made everything *work*. The circulation was “flipped” from the East of the house to the West, making just enough space for a cozy but luxurious bathroom. One tread was added to the stair which was just enough to make it comfortable without impacting the downstairs floorplan. In the upstairs sitting area, purposeful built-ins were designed along one entire wall, accommodating an entertainment area and a work-from-home desk, clearing the footprint of unnecessary furniture by capturing space from the existing knee-walls. The new circulation to the bedroom was re-imagined as a walk-through closet with all clutter contained in custom wardrobes and dressers. The primary bedroom itself features a whole wall of built-in wardrobes and custom reading sconces on the opposing headboard wall. The pallette of the entire second floor was a study in color-drenching, bold evocation of texture and pattern, and a thorough nod to both the client’s personal tastes and the era of the home. In the end, the project punches well above its weight in terms of square footage, showing that sometimes careful attention to detail is as impactful as the bigger moves.
