Color-Blocked House
What began as a stereotypical early 90’s home, complete with angled soffits, pink sinks, glass block windows, and carpeted bathrooms, is now a unique modern abode sitting alongside a wooded hill in the SW Portland neighborhood of Healy Heights. The final design was a collaborative process between the THESIS design team, Hammer & Hand Construction, and the passionate and creative homeowners, both of whom are graphic artists. The owner’s design brief involved a restrained overall palette for the interior, creating a bright and airy “vessel” for their art, which is bold, punchy, and ever-changing. On the exterior, a moody black body color for the home is set off by powder-coated metalwork in primary colors – a striking visual surprise in the backdrop of the forest setting. A singular statement on the exterior comes in the form of a punched circular opening in a gabled parapet that highlights a roof deck inspired by the client’s favorite movie – Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice. The result is a home that is as much art as it is architecture, and is a deeply personal expression of the clients own unique aesthetic. Photos by Haris Kenjar Photography
